Class Teacher: Mrs Powell
Teaching assistant: Mrs Williamson
I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy New Year! I hope you all had a wonderful time with your families celebrating Christmas and are now ready to start this year full of enthusiasm and energy.
This term I will continue to use Class Dojo as a tool for communicating with parents, updating you about events and for sharing important information. Lots of rewards have been enjoyed so far! Please continue encouraging your child to use Mathletics and TT Rock Stars as a way to improve their maths skills.
I’m delighted to notice that our class attendance is improving gradually. Thank you!
In Literacy we will write information reports and historical texts. This term the children will explore the features of an information report and a historical text before writing their own. They will consider reasons for starting new paragraphs and look at how cohesion is achieved within and between paragraphs. The use of a range of punctuation and ambitious or technical vocabulary will be the focus of our writing lessons.
In Maths our main focus will be on gaining a deeper understanding of the content taught in the autumn term. Most of the children are now fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics which allows them to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately. My next target is ensuring that the children can reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry and using mathematical language in lessons. This term the children will use all four operations to solve problems involving measure (length, mass, volume, money) and study a range of angles in geometry.
During this term we will be looking at the topic of Viking Science. This unit will teach the children about some Viking food production methods and modern production of dairy foods. The children will identify, describe and classify micro-organisms. The children will also devise and conduct tests to compare the effectiveness of glue. Furthermore, they will work collaboratively to plan and conduct scientific enquiries, presenting findings.
This half term in History we will be exploring the Vikings and the Anglo-Saxons. This unit will teach the children about the raids and invasions by Vikings in Anglo-Saxon Britain. They will learn who the Vikings were as well as when and where they raided and settled. They will also learn about significant events from the period and order these chronologically on a timeline. The children will find out about the Anglo-Saxon kings who ruled during the 'Viking Age' and examine their influence and significance in British history. We will also have the opportunity to learn about different aspects of everyday Viking life.
Our RE topic will mainly be about Muhammad as an important figure in Islam. We will learn about the life of Muhammad and his impact on history. The children will also learn about the importance of the Qur’an to Muslims. Our RE lessons will allow time to ask and respond to questions about Muslims’ daily lives while reflecting on personal emotions.
The Art topic this term is Monet and the Impressionists. This unit will allow children to explore what Impressionism is and where and when it began. The children will explore some of Monet’s landscape paintings and paintings of cities.
This term, the children will learn about spreadsheets and how they can be used. First, they will find data from the internet using Google maps, then they will learn skills in formatting and entering specific formulas as well as investigative skills in using the spreadsheet to solve specific problems.
PE DAYS -NEW!!!
Indoor PE– Monday afternoons
Outdoor PE – Monday afternoons
Ensure your child always has in school an appropriate P.E. kit. Earrings should be removed, if this is not possible please provide micro-pore tape for your children and long hair must be tied back.
During this term we will look at the topic of ‘Time to eat’. Children will learn key vocabulary about food and colours. They will also learn to make polite requests in Spanish. Hopefully, by the end of this unit, the children will be able to have short conversations about food.
* PUNCTUALITY- Please remember that the children need to be at school for 8.40 am. Please be reminded that if your child is not in school before 8.50 am they will be registered with a late mark. In KS2, we regularly stress how punctuality and organisation are very important life skills, so please help us enhance this learning by arriving in school on time every day. Thank you for your help with this.
* CLASS FUND - Each term we ask for a small contribution of £2. This goes towards extra resources, such as ingredients for cooking and arts and crafts. This contribution is so important at Christmas and Easter time when we want to make lots of arty things that the children can proudly take home.
