Welcome to Squirrels Class Page. You will find everything you need to know about Year 1 on this page. In Year 1 we transition from the Early Years curriculum into National curriculum where subjects are taught explicitly. We transition the children gently into this by holding onto elements of our play through continuous provision and lots of practical activities in our lessons. We like to have fun, work hard and make sure we commit to becoming the best version of ourselves, so that we can confidently take on our school journey.

  • Always remember to bring your home/school diary in you book bag each day.
  • Read your reading book each night to become a confident and fluent reader.
  • Remind your adult to comment and sign to show you have read.
  • Name all of your belongings; this will help you find your things when looking for them!
  • Bring in a water bottle daily; water is great for both your brain and your health! Bring in a healthy snack for break time such as fruit or vegetables.
  • Be punctual each day; every morning we have a morning task to be completed as soon as you come in and therefore we don’t want you missing valuable learning time.
  • Complete your homework when it is given, this will help you consolidate your learning in school and help show your families what you are learning about.

What are we learning about this term?

This term, we will be learning all about identifying animals. This includes learning the different animal groups, the different habitats they live in and the food they eat. We will also compare pets to wild animals.  Our topic this term ‘My world and me’ is Geography based and will be teaching us about the world map and helping us to locate the UK, the poles and the equator. We will be comparing the UK to Ecuador. In RE we will be learning about ‘Special places’; the children will talk about their own special places and special places for Christians, Muslims and Buddhists. In Art, we will be learning about colour and how to mix them. We will look at the work of famous artist Piet Mondrian. In ICT we will be introducing programming and learning how to sequence movements. We will be going on a trip to Windsor Castle where we will be learning about how it is a special place for our King and visiting the chapel, which is very special place for Christians. In PSHCE we are learning to set simple goals and in music we are learning to explore sounds.

In Year 1, we teach the children to read through phonics. We recap our Set 1 and Set 2 sounds that we learnt in Reception and learn our Set 3 sounds. We learn to read these sounds in real and pseudo words, that we call green and nonsense words. In our reading sessions, we also learn tricky words, which we call ‘red words’ and develop our comprehension skills.

In year 1, you have access to a range of reading materials that will help you to develop your reading skills. Reading your phonics book at home will help you to become a fluent reader. Remember reading the same text over and over will help you develop your vocabulary, confidence and ultimately your fluency.

You will take home:

Phonics Book Bag Book -  A phonics book linked to the sounds you are learning in school.

Ebook - A phonics e-book linked to the books you are reading in phonics. (Links for these are emailed out at the start of each term)

A library book – Chosen by you from the library bus to share with a grown up at home.
