In Year 1, we teach the children to read through phonics. We recap our Set 1 and Set 2 sounds that we learnt in Reception and learn our Set 3 sounds. We learn to read these sounds in real and pseudo words, that we call green and nonsense words. In our reading sessions, we also learn tricky words, which we call ‘red words’ and develop our comprehension skills.
In year 1, you have access to a range of reading materials that will help you to develop your reading skills. Reading your phonics book at home will help you to become a fluent reader. Remember reading the same text over and over will help you develop your vocabulary, confidence and ultimately your fluency.
In Year 2 we consolidate our phonic knowledge of all sounds to secure our fluency skills. We work hard to ‘read for meaning’ and become confident at tacking questions, ideas and themes about a story or text. As we become confident readers, we partake in guided reading sessions with a class teacher to teach us reading for meaning skills. It is important to keep reading regularly at home and asking an adult to question you about a story so you can show you have understood what you have read.
We follow a scheme called Read Write Inc Phonics to learn to read and write. Please watch this video for more information: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sjlPILhk7bQ
