Term 3
In English, children will explore two engaging texts: The Bear and the Piano by David Litchfield and The Bears Under the Stairs. Through these stories, pupils will develop their writing skills by creating a file of fears entry, letters seeking help and advice, and retelling stories. The main outcome will be an information text about bears. Children will focus on joining words and clauses using conjunctions, using expanded noun phrases, and applying correct punctuation including capital letters, full stops, question marks and exclamation marks.
In Mathematics, pupils will focus on addition and subtraction within 100, building fluency with number bonds and related facts. Year 1 children will add and subtract 1-digit and 2-digit numbers to 20, while Year 2 pupils will work with larger numbers including two 2-digit numbers. Later in the term, they will explore multiplication and division, counting in multiples of 2s, 5s and 10s.
In Science, pupils will study Animals Including Humans, with a focus on life cycles. They will learn how to order the stages of the human life cycle and explore the lifecycles of chickens, butterflies and frogs, developing their understanding of how living things grow and change.
In PSHCE, the theme is Dreams and Goals. Pupils will explore what it means to set goals and achieve success, work together on group challenges, celebrate their achievements, and learn about being healthy.
In Geography, children will embark on a journey to the Arctic, exploring the Arctic Circle, its climate, physical features, and the animals that live there. They will investigate cities and towns in the Arctic Circle and compare an Arctic town to the United Kingdom, developing their map reading skills along the way.
In Computing, pupils will be introduced to data handling. They will learn what data is, use software to create and label pictograms, edit tables, create bar charts, pie charts and line charts, and interpret the data they collect.
In Art, pupils will explore Cubism through self-portraits. They will investigate portraits by various artists, explore how objects can convey meaning, experiment with different drawing media, record self-portraits from observation, use colour to convey moods and emotions, and create portrait sculptures which they will evaluate.
In PE, pupils will develop netball skills including rolling, throwing, catching, bouncing and moving with a ball, as well as defending by blocking a target. In dance, they will move in different ways with control, work individually and with others, move expressively to music, compose short dances, and participate in a performance.
In Music, children will explore the song 'I Wanna Play in a Band', developing their understanding of pulse, rhythm, pitch, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture and chords. They will sing, play instrumental parts, improvise using three notes (B, A and G), and perform the final song.
In RE, pupils will learn about Sikhism, discovering how Sikhism began, what being equal means to a Sikh, why Sikhs meditate, and why Sikhs believe people should work hard, live honestly and share with others.
Throughout the term, pupils will take part in enriching experiences such as National Storytelling Week, Children's Mental Health Week, Safer Internet Day, a walk to the woodlands for science enrichment, and a visit to a Gurdwara for RE enrichment, giving them opportunities to celebrate creativity, wellbeing, and personal growth.
