This half term, Year 5 pupils will build on their creativity, confidence and independence through a wide range of engaging learning opportunities across the curriculum.
In English, Geography and Art, children will explore powerful natural environments and creative storytelling. Through the texts The Whale by Ethan and Vita Murrow and Shakespeare’s The Tempest, pupils will develop their descriptive writing, dialogue and performance skills, leading to outcomes such as a film pitch and play script. Geography lessons will focus on mountains, including how they are formed, mountain climates and the impact of tourism on these environments. In Art, children will study the work of Claude Monet, exploring impressionism and creating their own landscape paintings inspired by famous artists.
Maths and Computing lessons will strengthen reasoning, problem-solving and logical thinking skills. Pupils will work on decimals, percentages, perimeter, area and shape, while also developing their understanding of angles and measurement. In Computing, children will move from block-based coding into text-based programming, learning about algorithms, variables, loops and app design.
Science and PSHE learning will focus on growth, health and relationships. In Science, pupils will investigate plant life processes and life cycles of mammals, insects, birds and reptiles through practical investigations and research projects. PSHE lessons will encourage children to think carefully about healthy lifestyles, body image, peer pressure, online relationships and staying safe in digital communities.
Across PE, Music and Languages, children will continue developing teamwork, resilience and communication skills. Athletics and Tennis lessons will focus on improving control, coordination and tactical play through races, jumping, throwing and rallies. In Music, pupils will develop confidence through instrumental tuition and performance opportunities. French lessons will help children build conversational vocabulary linked to home life, hobbies and personal preferences.
Throughout the half term, pupils will also take part in exciting enrichment activities including a habitat safari, a farm visit, drama workshops, music tuition, sporting events and class performances, helping to bring their learning to life in memorable and engaging ways.
