Squirrels - Year 1 Class
Welcome
Welcome to Squirrels Class Page. You will find everything you need to know about Year 1 on this page. In Year 1 we transition from the Early Years curriculum into National curriculum where subjects are taught explicitly. We transition the children gently into this by holding onto elements of our play through continuous provision and lots of practical activities in our lessons. We like to have fun, work hard and make sure we commit to becoming the best version of ourselves, so that we can confidently take on our school journey.

What are we learning about this term?
TERM 6
Maths
This term, we will be focusing on three key areas in maths: place value, money, and time. We will begin by exploring numbers from 50 to 100, helping children recognise, read, write, and understand these numbers. They will learn how numbers are made up of tens and ones and will practise comparing, ordering, and counting forwards and backwards using number lines and practical equipment.
Once confident with place value, we will move on to money. In this unit, children will learn to identify and use different UK coins and notes, understand their values, and make different amounts in a variety of ways. Through fun, hands-on activities such as role-play shops, they will also begin solving simple problems involving totals and change.
Towards the end of the term, our focus will shift to learning how to tell the time. Children will learn to read the time to the hour and half past the hour using both analogue and digital clocks. They will also explore how time relates to their daily routines and begin sequencing events throughout the day. These topics will help children develop essential number skills, practical understanding, and real-life problem-solving abilities.
English
In writing lessons this term, we will be exploring two exciting and imaginative books: Iggy Peck, Architect by Andrea Beaty and The Magic Bed by John Burningham.
Through Iggy Peck, Architect, children will be inspired by Iggy’s creativity and passion for building. We will use the story as a springboard for writing character descriptions, designing our own imaginative structures, and creating persuasive texts about the importance of following your passions.
Later in the term, we will delve into the magical world of The Magic Bed, encouraging children to develop their descriptive writing skills and use their imaginations to create their own magical journeys. We will also explore story settings and plot structure.
Throughout the term, we will place a strong emphasis on developing vocabulary, sentence structure, and building confidence in both spoken and written language.
Science
We will be learning about materials, with a focus on those used in building houses. Children will learn to identify and name common materials and describe their physical properties, such as texture, strength, and flexibility.
Geography
Our topic this term is 'let's go to the jungle'. We will learn where jungles are located and identify which continents they are part of. Children will also develop their map skills and understanding of global geography.
DT
We will be working on the theme of Teddy Bears’ Picnic. This exciting topic will culminate in a special event where parents will be invited to join their children for a picnic, celebrating the work they’ve done throughout the unit.
PHSE
We are going to be exploring the topic Changing Me, where children will begin to learn about life changes, including those related to their growing bodies. This will be taught in a sensitive and age-appropriate manner.
PE
We are very excited to be starting our weekly swimming sessions where children will be taught the basics of water safety, along with beginner swimming skills. We shall also be learning all about cricket and competing in Sports Day.
Reading
In Year 1, we teach the children to read through phonics. We recap our Set 1 and Set 2 sounds that we learnt in Reception and learn our Set 3 sounds. We learn to read these sounds in real and pseudo words, that we call green and nonsense words. In our reading sessions, we also learn tricky words, which we call ‘red words’ and develop our comprehension skills.
In year 1, you have access to a range of reading materials that will help you to develop your reading skills. Reading your phonics book at home will help you to become a fluent reader. Remember reading the same text over and over will help you develop your vocabulary, confidence and ultimately your fluency.
You will take home:
Phonics Book Bag Book - A phonics book linked to the sounds you are learning in school.
E-book - A phonics e-book linked to the books you are reading in phonics. (Links for these are emailed out at the start of each term)
A library book – Chosen by you from the library to share with a grown up at home.
Homework
In Year 1, we focus your home learning on reading, phonics, spelling and maths.
Reading homework- Read your phonics book daily and use the ebooks for additional books
Phonics homework- Practice reading the sounds and the green & alien words you are learning this term
Spellings homework – a selection of spellings to read and spell. Spelling tests will be during our Read Write Inc session on a Friday
Maths homework – Activity to complete at home which helps you to practice and consolidate your learning in school
