Term 4
This half term, Year 6 will be engaging in a rich and varied curriculum as we continue to build knowledge, independence and confidence across all subjects.
English: We will be reading Goodnight Mister Tom, exploring themes, characters and authorial intent through discussion and comprehension activities. Our writing will be inspired by The Three Little Pigs Project by The Guardian, where pupils will focus on non-fiction and persuasive writing, producing both informal and formal letters. Later in the term, we will complete a poetry unit during Poetry Week. Grammar and spelling lessons will continue to consolidate key Year 6 objectives, including modal verbs, passive voice, relative clauses and statutory spellings.
Maths: Children will deepen their understanding of decimals and place value, including rounding and using the four operations. They will also develop their knowledge of fractions, decimals and percentages, exploring equivalence, ordering and converting between forms. Throughout the unit, there will be a strong focus on reasoning, fluency and problem-solving.
Science: Our topic is Animals Including Humans, with a focus on the circulatory system. Children will learn about the structure and function of the heart, identify and compare blood vessels, and understand how nutrients and water are transported around the body. They will also investigate what affects heart rate and learn about the impact of drugs and alcohol on the body.
Through our PSHE Jigsaw unit, Healthy Me, pupils will explore taking responsibility for their own health and wellbeing. They will discuss emotional and mental health, managing stress and pressure, and understanding the risks linked to drugs, exploitation and gangs.
Geography: We will be studying Japan. Children will locate Japan using latitude and longitude, learn about earthquakes and tectonic plates, explore the country’s physical and human geography, and compare the life of a Japanese school child with that of a child in the UK.
PE: We will develop their skills in football and dodgeball. They will build their passing, attacking and defending skills in football and take part in tournament play. In dodgeball, they will focus on aiming, accuracy, ball control and teamwork.
Computing: Children will take part in the “Data Detectives” unit, where they will learn to use spreadsheets to organise and interpret data, using tools such as filters and conditional formatting. They will also revisit important E-Safety learning.
Art: Our Street Art project will allow pupils to explore graffiti-style lettering and public art. They will develop sketching techniques, create satirical artwork and design and produce stencil-based street art pieces.
Music: Pupils will take part in the Music and Me unit. They will learn about inspirational women working in music while developing their understanding of pulse, rhythm, pitch and musical structure.
RE: We will be learning about Jewish Worship and Community, exploring key features of worship in Judaism, the importance of prayer and Jewish rituals, and considering how belonging to a faith community can influence actions and choices.
Spanish: Children will continue to develop their speaking, listening and writing skills by learning vocabulary linked to family members, pets and spelling.
This half term also includes a number of exciting enrichment opportunities, including Book Week, an author visit, Poetry Week, the Year 6 residential and a Year 5/6 Quidditch event at Bisham Abbey.
We are looking forward to a busy and productive half term as Year 6 continue to prepare for the next stage of their education.
