Term 3
This half term, Year 6 pupils will take part in a rich and engaging curriculum that builds both academic skills and personal development.
In English, pupils will explore both non-fiction and fiction writing. They will begin by learning how to write a balanced argument, developing skills in presenting viewpoints clearly and using formal language. Later in the term, they will study flashback narratives, analysing how authors manipulate time and perspective before crafting their own creative pieces. Spelling, grammar and vocabulary development will be embedded throughout.
In Mathematics, children will deepen their understanding of fractions, including comparing, ordering, and performing calculations with them. They will also learn how to multiply and divide fractions and find fractions of an amount. Later in the term, the focus will shift to decimals, covering place value, rounding, and the four operations. Pupils will apply their learning through problem-solving and reasoning activities.
In Science, pupils will investigate climate change and environmental issues. They will explore causes, effects, and possible solutions, learning how data can be used to demonstrate climate patterns and changes over time. This topic links closely with our PSHCE learning, where children will reflect on their dreams and goals and consider how they can make a positive difference in the world.
In History, pupils will study World War II, learning about key events such as the Blitz, evacuation, rationing, and the experiences of refugees. They will develop their understanding of how the war affected everyday life and the emotions of those who lived through it.
In Computing, children will be introduced to Python programming, learning basic syntax, using print commands, creating loops, accepting user input, and debugging simple programs.
In Design and Technology, pupils will design, build, and evaluate shelters, exploring materials, stability, and structure. This will help them understand how design choices meet specific needs.
In PE, pupils will focus on fitness and netball skills, improving stamina, coordination, teamwork, and tactical awareness.
In Music, children will explore the works of Benjamin Britten, comparing different musical styles and versions of songs from around the world.
In RE, pupils will thoughtfully explore questions about life, death, and remembrance, learning how different religions and communities mark and understand these experiences.
Throughout the term, pupils will take part in enrichment activities including a visit to the Imperial War Museum, National Storytelling Week, E-Safety Day, and Children’s Mental Health Week, helping to broaden their experiences and deepen their understanding of the world.
