The role of the governors
What do governors do?
Governors have three main roles:
The strategic role, which is about:
- Developing and supporting the vision for the school
- Developing aims for the school
- Planning so that all pupils can achieve the very best they can
The Governors' Role in School Improvement - Act as a 'Critical Friend' by:
- Monitoring and evaluating the school's work
- Visits to the school
- Ensuring that all meetings are effective by reading all papers prior to the meeting and preparing their questions and any areas that they would like to discuss at the meeting
The Accountability role of the Governing Body -
- Reporting on progress
- Reciprocal accountability between school leaders and governors
- Being accountable to parents and the community they serve
School governors make important collective decisions and the governing body is answerable to parents and the community. The responsibilities of the governing body include:
- Promoting high standards of education and achievement
- Planning the school's long-term future
- Setting the school's aims and values
- Appointing senior staff including the Headteacher
- Budgetary allocation and control
- Deciding on the number of staff to be employed
- Making sure that the curriculum is broad and balanced

Slough and East Berkshire C of E Multi Academy Trust (SEBMAT)
Stoke Road, Slough SL2 5AY Tel: 01753 691583
Registered number: 07723151 Registered in England and Wales
Slough and East Berkshire Church of England Multi Academy Trust (SEBMAT) has been established to form a group of seven schools that can support each other to ensure the best possible outcomes for the young people in Slough and the nearby areas. This group of schools may include primary and secondary phases and may have a Church of England link but this would not prevent non Church of England schools joining the Trust. SEBMAT will support schools to achieve educational excellence through robust governance, effective leadership and management, coaching, sharing good practice and helping to secure good value for money.
Slough and Eton Church of England Business and Enterprise Academy, Colnbrook Church of England Primary School and Eton Porny Church of England First School are the first three schools in SEBMAT. Lynch Hill Enterprise Academy and Lynch Hill School Primary Academy joined the Trust on 1st January 2019. Woodlands Park Primary School joined in November 2022 and most recently, Grove Academy joined in 2023.
